Savitar VI System

Ashlyn stepped off the lift and glanced around. The taskforce was less than an hour outside the Savitar VI system. Admiral Richard Collins stood in the center of the flag bridge. Ash had been surprised when she learned Second Fleet’s commanding officer would lead the taskforce. She had been worried as well. Elements of Second Fleet had been helping protect the home system while First Fleet was brought back up to strength. Even so, it relieved her to have him there. Collins was one of those rare Navy officers who understood the rules were there for a reason and a battle plan never survived past the first encounter. He was, in her opinion, one of the few best suited for a mission of this sort.

Not that anyone had asked her.

“Colonel, are your people ready?” he asked as he turned in her direction.

“Yes, sir. Just awaiting orders.”

Collins nodded and turned his attention back to the holo screen. “Status?”

“Scanners clear, sir,” a young lieutenant said. “Comparing current readings with the passive scanners the LACs planted earlier shows no change.”

Collins nodded. As he did, Ash noted how several of those on the flag bridge relaxed slightly. She understood why but she also knew they weren’t anywhere near clear, not yet at any rate.

“Comms?”

“We’re picking up minimal chatter from in-system, sir. That’s to be expected considering they have not yet replaced the comms platforms the enemy destroyed.”

“Have they repaired any of them, sergeant?”

“The best we can tell, possibly one.”

Collins frowned but said nothing. “Very well. Bring the taskforce to ready stations. Main crews are to suit up. Colonel Shaw, get your Marines in place. Let’s prepare for the worst and pray for the best.”

“With the Admiral’s permission?”

“Go. But be back in fifteen.”

“Roger that, sir.”

She turned on her heel and left the bridge. It was finally showtime. She only wished she had a better idea of what they were about to walk into.

“Ten-hut!”

Her brother’s voice rang out over the sounds of Marines checking their gear and talking about the upcoming mission. Ashlyn glanced around, letting the sounds wash over her. The dark humor, the sounds and smells of weapons and armor being prepped for battle reassured her. So did the way every Marine present, not just those assigned to her regiment, instantly stopped and braced to attention. They were Marines, dedicated to protecting Fuercon and her allies. If that meant laying down their lives, they would do so.

Ooh-rah!

“Listen up.” She waited as all eyes turned to her. “We are about to enter the Savitar VI system. Company commanders, make sure your people know their assignments. Captain Connover, until we know exactly what we’re facing, your Marines are to back up their Navy counterparts and assist the damage control teams. Lieutenant Jacobs, prep your LACs for launch. Devil Dogs, Warlords, to the battle shuttles. Panzers, until we know for sure what we’re facing, you are to back up Captain Connover’s people. Now get armored up and report to your stations.”

“You heard the colonel,” Master Gunnery Sergeant Kevin Talbot said.
